They also have a human habit of collecting a treasure trove of shiny objects on the ground near their nests that they enjoy turning over to brag about from time to time. The population of Fish Crows is increasing and spreading their habitat range farther up north along inland coastal rivers and has become much more common for bird watchers in recent years.Īll crows can recognize certain people and remember their treatment of crows. Now with spring coming on, the American Crows are returning from their winter gathering in the cities in the flocks so they can roost warm and safely in the municipal heating systems, as well as under the watchful eyes of alert numbers.Īs in my illustration of a Fish Crow left behind all winter in the seaside cold and snow on Little Bay in Fairhaven, the Fish Crow is slightly smaller than the American Crow and hard to identify or tell the difference, except for sounding a different muted crowing like “urk, urk, urk” as opposed to the American Crow’s “caw, caw, caw.” That is because they take good care of their young and are very clever in defending them against numerous enemies. During courtship, both the male and female hawks screech at each other.Īdditionally, hawks can screech even when not mating but to only pass the warning message to intruders. The American Crow is one of the most widely distributed and recognized birds in North America.Īccording to naturalists, there are more crows in this country than when the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth. The other reason why hawks may screech in flight is when they impress each other during mating. So, when you notice a hawk screeching in flight, most likely he is asserting his dominance and warning other males to keep off his territory. The male hawk displays dominance by loudly screeching to claim his territory as part of the mating ritual. During the mating season, you may notice hawks in groups as males chase after females. As mentioned earlier, hawks are lone creatures except during mating season. Hawks screeching in flight is an entirely regular occurrence, especially during mating. The only non-hostile screech they make is when mating and impressing each other. By far, they mostly screech when proclaiming their territory. When hawks screech, they make a clear pattern. For that reason, it will not be a surprise to notice the young ones make a quieter sound. If you may listen to the hawks screeching, every bird produces a different sound depending on size. Therefore, the hawks don’t screech at their young ones but at nearby creatures as a warning. The mates guard their nests and screech at any intruder animal or human who comes too close. They make their nest and reuse it every year unless it becomes uninhabitable. However, if you are sure that it is a hawk screeching, it could be warning an intruder.ĭuring mating season, a male and female hawk sticks together and mate for life. Since they sleep after sunset, it is unlikely they are the ones making noise at night. They utilize the shadows and dim light to stalk the prey.īeing diurnal, they retire when the sun sets and rise again in the morning to hunt at dawn. Hawks hunt at dusk when their prey comes from their burrows. However, they are diurnal and only hunt at night. Most people think that hawks are nocturnal creatures because they are active at night.

This image shows what happens when a child tries to access the Discovery Plus App without permission through the Xbox. That means we can watch any of the available shows on the big screen, but only once I’ve signed in. We also added the Discovery Plus App to our Xbox on adult accounts. My device is password-protected, and that means I can control who gets to watch and make sure no one is watching privately. Adults are the only people with the Discovery Plus App on my personal devices in our home. One benefit of using the app for homeschooling? You can go directly to the episode you want to watch, so you aren’t dependent on a television schedule. I also found the search bar on the bottom, which makes finding favorite shows much faster and with less danger. After a little exploring, I did discover that I can add shows to our watch list and start tailoring what I see on the home page to what we view or want to view, which has already helped and will be a big relief. The content we found that we wanted to watch was going to have to far outweigh the negative effect that seeing all the blood and gore and sex stuff has on whoever has to find content. I have to tell you, at first we were just going to delete the app and move on with our lives. Trending searches are always at the top, and that’s not a good thing. When you click on search within the Discovery Plus App, this is the screen you see. In fact, my eleven-year-old was sitting next to me tonight while I tried to find out if one of his favorite series is on the app, and he ended up moving across the room. It’s impossible to scroll through the thumbnails and not see the barely-veiled nudity and other cringe content. I could not believe the amount of horror and other inappropriate content being pushed out in the Discovery Plus App so I strongly recommend caution if you decide to get it for your family. What You Don’t Want to Watch on the Discovery Plus App After some digging, we did find a treasure trove of educational shows on the Discovery Plus app so we’ve decided not to delete the app quite yet. So we downloaded the app right away and our first impression was - there isn’t much other family-friendly content we want our kids watching on this app. And of course, it’s only available on the Discovery Plus App. I was so excited! We watch a lot of home renovation shows, and I’ve been following the new Fixer Upper-Welcome Home commercials with interest, and love that the show is super family-friendly. My husband and I recently discovered we could get one full year of the Discovery Plus App for free through our internet provider (check yours!). With most small trees, remove stakes after one year larger trees might require stakes left in place for two years. The sooner the stake or stakes are removed, the sooner the plant can develop a strong trunk and root system. Even then, support for any young tree should let the top move freely and allow for some wiggle of the trunk, all without causing abrasion where the tie or ties make contact. Generally, don’t stake a tree unless it can’t support itself, if trunk movement causes the root ball to rock, or if wind might uproot the whole plant. Once a tree is in the ground, staking is the traditional next order of business - another practice needing reconsideration. In general, limit any pruning to total removal of a few stems rather than lopping back many stems. More important is that for every kind of nursery tree, the buds on stems, especially those near the tips, produce hormones that actually stimulate root growth. But many trees today are sold growing in containers, so they lose no roots at transplanting. Myth held that the tops of newly planted trees needed pruning to balance the loss of roots that occurred during transplanting. No need to do a lot of work with your pruning tools either. Spread compost and other organic materials on top of the ground as mulch. But if you were a young root growing in such a place, would you ever want to leave? No. The idea was to create a fluffy, rich substrate for the developing roots. Yet another myth that can be laid to rest is the recommendation to mix plenty of compost or other organic materials into the soil from the planting hole. A “perched” water table forms above the layer of gravel it doesn’t drain until the upper layer becomes saturated. What results is the opposite of what was intended. The practice of dumping gravel or some other coarse material into the bottom of the planting hole to help drain away excess water is another dated notion. The shallow hole sets plants on a firm base of undisturbed soil that won’t settle with time. Or higher, if a mound is needed for improved drainage. New research shows that tree roots take hold best in a cone-shaped planting hole only 2 to 3 times the diameter of the root ball, and no deeper than necessary to stand the plant at the same level as it stood at the nursery. Smaller nursery trees establish more quickly in their new homes than larger ones, and usually outgrow them.īut you don’t need to dig as deep as conventional wisdom has held. Roots, on the other hand, grow whenever the soil temperature is above about 40 degrees, so they can still make use of summer’s lingering heat in the ground.īEST PLANTING TECHNIQUES ARE ALSO EASIEST Stems can’t grow until they have experienced a winter’s worth of cold. With spring planting, there’s a danger that stems can start to grow before the roots are established in the ground. Their beauty and delicious fruits and nuts are other perks.Įxperts used to recommend planting trees in spring. Their shade can cool things down in summer. Why plant trees? It’s well-known that trees mitigate global warming by taking in and storing carbon dioxide. There’s a better understanding now of what trees need, including when they should generally be planted (the fall). Planting a tree is one of the best things you can do to help the planet, and these days it’s gotten easier. Trees benefit our planet in so many ways, as well as providing us humans with beauty, food and shade. 25 June 2021.This undated photo shows Japanese and sugar maple trees in Bryn Mawr, Penn. Although Kat’s character is one representation of the plus-size community, she still fits into the entertainment industry’s “ideal” body shape - small waist, hourglass figure. The representation in the show is far from perfect. I don’t deny there’s a lot of truth there. So a common argument is that “Euphoria” hyper-sexualizes Kat to give her character value. And therefore, her work as a cam girl is child pornography. And it should be noted Kat is a minor in the show. Especially because by episode three, she becomes an online sex worker. Many viewers interpret Kat’s storyline in season one to fall into another common trope for plus-size women - hyper-sexualization. She changes her style completely, becomes more interested in guys and carries herself with more confidence. Being seen as undesirable and desexualized is a common trope for plus-size characters.īut when Kat loses her virginity, it marks the beginning of her sexual awakening. Later in the episode, there’s a flashback of Kat telling another character she’s a virgin - who responds by telling her to get with the times and have sex already.Īfter watching that, I definitely cringed a bit. Kat looks away and ignores the question out of embarrassment. But eventually, BB asks Kat how many guys she’s had sex with - although it is heavily implied BB already knows the answer is zero. They initially talk about Maddy’s relationship. In season one, the first scene introducing Kat shows her with her friends, Maddy and BB. And as a woman who also resides in a larger body, I looked forward to Kat’s storyline the most. Kat, portrayed by actress Barbie Ferreira, is the show’s only representation of fat women. Kat Hernandez on “Euphoria” was my favorite character on the show - up until this second season. The Planeswalker-centric version is basically just all of your favorite powerful Planeswalkers jammed together, while the Niv-Mizzet Reborn version is only made up of two-color cards to abuse Niv’s enter the battlefield trigger. Both are five-color monstrosities that can easily lose to themselves but are immensely satisfying when the work. There are two main ways to build Superfriends: go all-in on Planeswalkers or go all-in on Niv-Mizzet Reborn. And with the release of War of the Spark, MTG Arena’s Singleton format just got 36 new Planeswalkers options. Superfriends is a tried and true archetype in all singleton formats. The decks we’ve highlighted here are far from a comprehensive picture of the metagame-what metagame, really?-but try to craft your game plan with these archetypes in mind. Third, card advantage matters even more than in Standard, as drawing a few extra cards means you’re that much more likely to find your bombs. Because you’re limited to one copy of each card, that means drawing your bombs will have a larger effect than in a normal Constructed match, similar to Limited. Second, the format can feel bomb-centric and thus kind of swingy. There aren’t enough good, aggressive, low-cost creatures in Standard right now to overcome the one copy limit. First, most decks are relatively slow-except for Rat Colony decks and the occasional Mono-Red, Mono-White, or Boros player. There are a couple of things to keep in mind when brewing for Singleton, though. So don’t worry about your deck being perfect! Just build something that looks interesting and get out there and have fun. One of the perks of a format that is rarely available means that most people won’t have perfectly tuned lists and are more likely to try and have fun. Just like Standard Pauper, Singleton is only available on MTG Arena during special events. ” This allows a Rat Colony or Persistent Petitioners deck to break the fundamental rule that defines the format: the limit of one copy of a card per deck. Both of these cards have rules text that says, “A deck can have any number of cards named. There are two key exceptions- Rat Colony and Persistent Petitioners. On MTG Arena, the Singleton format is limited to the cards that are on MTG Arena, which means the cards that are legal in Standard, so from Ixalan through War of the Spark. Singleton is a Constructed format where you can only play one copy of any card in your 60-card deck-except for basic lands. New to the format? Don’t worry-I’m here to guide you through the basics so you can get all three of those sweet card styles. You’ll be able to win stained glass card styles for The Wanderer, Samut, Tyrant Smasher, and Sorin, Vengeful Bloodlord by getting three, nine, and 15 wins, respectively. Singleton is back on MTG Arena this week as part of Week 3 of the War of the Spark Chronicles event series. I know I'm back in a house like the one I was captured in, but I don't know why I keep returning here whenever I die. I don't mean to sound cryptic in the way I'm writing this, it's just that this is how Darkwood makes me feel. Except, actually, it's only just beginning. And you begin to see what those cages were for. Then, the game flips and suddenly, you're the stranger and you're locked up, and you begin to see the man you were before in a whole new light. Then a stranger arrives and you capture him. You're some bloke trapped in a cabin in the woods, and as you explore the cabin, you find cages, but you can't clearly see what's going on because the lights are dim - the game loves playing around with light. Keep the lights on, keep the enemies away at night.ĭarkwood makes much more sense in motion - screenshots can't really do it justice.īut it's what's underneath, and what starts to emerge in time, that makes Darkwood so much more. You've played this kind of game a million times before. It's surprising because the top-down, retro presentation - it's quite like Hotline Miami but without the lurid colours - and the base-defence set-up make it feel quite simple. But because reducing Darkwood to a conversation about scares misses so much of what I think it's about.ĭarkwood is deep - surprisingly so. Not because Darkwood isn't scary, or because it uses jump scares - it has surprised me a few times (maybe there's no getting away from this in horror), though not enough to suggest it leans on this as a scare tactic.
